Vicci was born April 2, 1949 in Rosenberg, Texas. She was raised by Victor and Anita Gregoire, living in Rhode Island and Connecticut. She grew up in Willimantic, CT, where she graduated high school. On May 12, 1979, she married James Conroy King in Coventry, CT.
In 1980, they moved to South Bend, Indiana. While there, Vicci took classes at Notre Dame and worked at a convent as a nurse’s aide for the retired nuns. They later moved back to Connecticut for the next 8 years. She and her husband loved to dance. They would be first on the dance floor to waltz, to do the twist or swing. She was a women’s champion bowler and was in many different bowling leagues throughout the years.
For five years, they were on the Connecticut River Powwow Society Board. They helped to plan and host powwows and other native events. From start to finish, they helped with every aspect. They published the newspaper for the society as well. The people she worked so closely with during these years were like family, even being a part of a traditional Lakota wedding.
In 1992, they retired to Haskell. For several years, she worked for the Haskell County Sheriff’s Office as a dispatcher. She was an active member of St. George Catholic Church, where she taught catechism classes, and she would refer to the students as “her kids.” Vicci was an Eucharistic minister, would help with readings, and fundraisers at the church, including the annual Jamaica’s. While living in Abilene, they attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church. For ten years they operated Loaves and Fishes food pantry for the church.
Vicci was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, hosted 5 exchange students, and an avid Notre Dame fan. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and reading books. She always made time for her children and grandchildren. Taking care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren was her favorite pastime.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Anita Gregoire; biological mother, Jean Lorraine Timmins; biological father, Patrick Lizotte; daughter, Jamie King; and grandson, Christopher Cook.
Vicci is survived by her husband of 45 years, James “Jim” King of Haskell; children, Maria Loya and husband Danny of Abilene; Sherri Olden of Haskell; Donny Rock and wife Laura of Marble Falls; Mark King and wife Michelle of Victoria; Tina King-Stepp and husband Billy of Beeville; Randy King of Throckmorton; sister, Dawn White of Enfield, CT; 9 half siblings; grandchildren, Christina Markunas Isbell, Eric Markunas, Justin King, Olivia Harvey, Cody Olden, Autuam Olden, Seth Rock, Melisa Rock, Cameron Jackson, Kevin Jackson, Logan King, Gaby King, Gage King, Lauren Young, Crystal Saling, Phillip Cook, Tiphanie Leal, Heather Vasquez, Nicholas Cook, and Billy W.
