H. Cleo Merchant

Herbert "Cleo" Merchant, 92, of Lovington, NM, formerly, Haskell, TX; passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at his home surrounded by family. A graveside service will be held 1:00pm, Friday, April 28, 2023 at Willow Cemetery with Stewart Wood, his grandson, officiating, under the direction of Haskell Funeral Home, 2 Avenue D. A visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00pm, Thursday, April 27, 2023 at Haskell Funeral Home. Condolences may be made at www.haskellfuneralhometx.com.

Cleo was born February 9, 1931, in Haskell, Texas, the son to the late Raymond Dale Merchant and Alma Margaret Martha Zahn Merchant. For 68 years, he worked as a plumber. He loved to go dancing with his late wife, Sue. On May 7, 1949, he married Sue Merchant, and they were married for 51 years. After the passing of his wife, he married Audrey Jean Merchant on August 4, 2001. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren play baseball. His favorite was the Little League World Series. He enjoyed woodworking and hunting. Cleo was a long-time member of the Haskell Volunteer Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Sue Merchant, sons, Wayne Merchant, Alan Merchant; son-in-law, Robert Glenn Wood; and brothers, J R Merchant and Luther "Buddy" Merchant.

Cleo is survived by his wife, Audrey Jean Strickland Merchant of Victoria, TX; daughter, Selena Wood of Lovington, NM; grandchildren; Stacy Taylor of Stamford, TX, Alan Wayne Merchant and wife Crystal of Abilene, TX; Stewart Wood and wife Sylvia; Jody Glenn Wood all of Lovington, NM; Aaron Merchant-Nauert of Dallas, TX; Nathan Nauert of San Antonio, TX; numerous great grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; extended family, nieces, nephews and a host of dear friends.
